My favourite bands

AIR - for their creativity, sounds, talent, one of a kind
LUSH- great pop songs with an etheral edge. More melodic than many shoegaze/British bands of the era.
VELOCETTE - one great album -another band from France
BROADCAST- they can make a melody with sounds that clash and make little sense.
CHICKLET- well written pop songs with creative instrumentation and a sweet lead singer.
STEREOLAB- one chord and you've got a great song! Multiply it with a new melody and you've got a discography!
DEAD CAN DANCE - they use interesting intruments and know how to create an atmosphere in their music.
CHAPTERHOUSE - awesome shoegazer songs
NEW ORDER - early New order that is.
BUFFALO DAUGHTER - crazy Japanese girls doing ultra-cool stuff
LUMINOUS ORANGE - another Japanese band writing great pop songs.

Let me name some bands, too. Without them I'd be gone...

  • Erlend Oye @ Kings Of Convenience / The Whitest Boy Alive
  • Chilly Gonzales - the dirty piano master mind
  • Yann Tiersen - I only know the Amelie soundtrack, but therefore I love you
  • LaBrassBanda - linking traditional brass to present - have you ever heard a brass Daft Punk cover??
  • Wolfmother - rock classic at it's best - and no one can reatch the guitar players hair
  • The Kooks
  • Maximo Park
  • The White Stripes
  • The Beatles
  • Die Sterne- that's my favourite (german) pop band (BTW, "die = the", so the translation is THE STARS, just to keep it right ;) --- @waiu: new album release on 26.2. --- their new sound badly got electrified :( I mainly prefer the old stuff
  • PeterLicht
  • Shawn Lee
  • Tommy Guerrero
  • Cat Power - strongly recommend their laid back cover album "juke box"
  • The Bird And The Bee - again and again, again and again...
  • Zero 7
  • Psapp - the sound snippet composers
  • Boards Of Canada
  • Fleet Foxes
  • Kruder & Dorfmeister - anyone wanna have a wiener melange with me?
  • Tosca
  • Couch
  • Feist
  • Samantha Crain - I start loving folk!
  • Alela Diane - Folk II
  • Lisa Mitchell - Folk III
  • Tuó - a young "girl" band from Munich
  • Noël - listened to them half an hour ago the first time and I'm blown away after two songs. You can't dislike them, can't you?!!

oops, that's a lot of stuff

You'r not alone gnoe, although they sing "im Zweifel für den Zweifel" ;) I wonder if anybody outside german speaking countries listen to Tocotronic, Die Sterne, Anajo, Blumfeld, Kante, Tomte, PeterLicht, Ja Panik!, Die Goldenen Zitronen, Kettcar, etc.... Oh yes, I have to add PeterLicht to my favourites! And maybe Helge Schneider for his uniqueness  ...."I brake together", "Lady Suppenhuhn"!

Ok, this is gonna be a long list, I like so many different bands and artists, so it would be hard to leave someone out just to narrow it down, so bear with me.

Queens of the Stone Age (my favourite band in the world)
AIR
Fun Lovin' Criminals (very underrated band imo, "Scooby Snacks" is what most people know, but that's where the knowledge stops and that's sad because they've got so much more great songs)
Nirvana
Rage Against The Machine
The Prodigy
Rival Schools
Stereophonics
Radiohead
Alice in Chains
Soundgarden
Filter
The White Stripes
Us3 - (really like their first 2 albums, especially the second one - "Broadway & 52nd". Wish more poeple knew about them, not just the 1 song - Cantaloop)
Deltron 3030
Beastie Boys
Boards of Canada
Massive Attack
Bowery Electric (Beat is an excellent album)
Cat Power (I'm more of a fan of her early work: "What Would the Community Think", "Moon Pix" and "You Are Free". Not her latest, it seems to me like, as soon as she got her life sorted out something just fell out of her music)
Placebo
Dimitri From Paris
Goldfrapp (their first album "Felt Mountain" is great, "Black Cherry" - ok. but from there on... not my thing)
Nouvelle Vague (great bossa nova covers, don't like they're 3rd album, though)
Jimi Hendrix
The Stooges
The Strokes
Auf der Maur
The Desert Sessions
Foo Fighters
The Hives
Wolfmother
Death in Vegas
Peace Orchestra
Orbital
Pole (he accidentally dropped and broke a filter and his first albums are based on the strange hissing and popping noises the broken filter makes... very interesting work)
Skalpel (polish nu jazz group)
Miles Davis
Tied & Tickled Trio
Ulrich Schnauss
Ilkae (give a listen to Pistachio Island)
Aphex Twin (not so much into his other stuff, but "Selected Ambient Works 85-92" is a great album)
Akira Yamaoka (big fan of his Silent Hill soundtracks)
LTJ Bukem (not only for his work, but also for the great dnb/downtempo compilations - Logical Progression, Progression Sessions, Earth series)

RE: Mr. Ripley

I agree completely with your assessment of Goldfrapp. Some other really great artists you have on there. Also I got to see LTJ Bukem and MC Conrad live once and it was a pretty great show...
